HYGGELIG MARKET

Outline

A one-day market built around the Danish concept of hyggelig—a feeling of comfort, warmth, and good company.

Question

How do you design a space that makes people want to slow down and share time together?

Challenge

The location was in Kiyosumi-Shirakawa.But it was far from the nearest station. The challenge wasn’t just designing a good atmosphere. It was getting people to walk out of their way for a single afternoon.

Approach

They started with the neighborhood. Before the doors opened, they printed flyers and handed them out to local shops. Inside the venue, the curation was simple. They didn’t just gather products. They gathered items that inspired people to spend comfortable time with someone else. It was designed not as a retail space, but as a quiet intersection for makers and buyers to actually meet.

Outcome

The response was immediate.Over 500 people arrived. The shelves emptied. Almost everything sold out. Television, radio, and web media picked up the story. But the real success happened after the doors closed. For several makers, a one-day event turned into permanent retail partnerships with stores across Tokyo. A temporary space created lasting connections.
